Description: An easy way of transcribing folk and traditional music
ABC2MTeX is a package written to typeset tunes stored in an ascii
format or abc notation. It was designed primarily for folk and
traditional tunes of Western European origin (such as Irish, English
and Scottish) which can be written on one stave in standard classical
notation. However, it can act as a fast preprocessor for multi-stave
music and should be extendible to many other types of music.
 .
The package is small, easy to use and features, amongst other things,
the ability to transpose both the music and the abc notation. It
will also create an index of all the tunes you have transcribed.
 .
The ability to write tunes in abc notation means that they can be
easily and portably stored or transported electronically. This
package allows you to typeset them easily too. In addition the
notation is not specifically tied to MusicTeX and similar packages
have been written to translate to other formats such as postscript
 and MIDI.
 .
(Note: MusicTeX is not packaged for Debian because MusicTeX is old.
Please the new-and-better MusiXTeX package instead. :)

Description: A single-player, text-based, dungeon simulation
Angband is a single-player, text-based, dungeon simulation derived
from the game Moria, which was in turn based on Rogue. It is
often described as a "roguelike" game because the look and feel of
the game is still quite similar to Rogue.
 .
Angband features many enhancements over Moria: unique foes, artifacts,
monster pits and vaults to name a few. Many of these new creatures
and objects are drawn from the writings of J.R.R Tolkien, although
some of the monsters come straight from classical mythology, Dungeons
& Dragons, Rolemaster, or the minds of the orginal Angband coders.
 .
The ultimate goal of the game is to develop a character strong enough
to defeat Morgoth, who resides on dungeon level 100. Upon doing so,
you will receive the exalted status of "winner" and your character may
 retire.
 .
Angband is a reference to Morgoth's "prison of iron."
 .
Morgoth was 'the Dark Enemy of Middle-Earth' during its First Age. He
was banished by the Valar (offspring of Eru, "god" of J.R.R.
Tolkien's world) at the end of the First Age and thus never appears
in The Lord of the Rings, set during the Third Age. Sauron, who does
figure into those tales, was the most powerful of his servants. Read
Tolkien's 'The Silmarillion' for more on the legends of Middle-Earth.

MD5sum: 8c56b44b9b31791ea9f4c6ad7788e9bd
Description: a Java GUI application programming framework
BISS-AWT is a java framework of about 150 Java classes for building
graphical applications with state-of-the-art user interfaces. Instead
of following the native lib based, "OS-native" look-and-feel (like
Suns java.awt), it is implemented purely in Jave and has its own
 "Java-native" look-and-feel.
 .
The framework can be extended without native library support (i.e. you
can write your specialized versions of TextAreas, Checkboxes, Lists
etc. without being forced to write your own, non-portable, native
 libraries).
 .
It already has nice things like text editors, pop-up menus, notebooks,
hierarchical Lists etc. without the need for a JDK 1.1 compliant
native lib. The cross platform compatibility has been tested on a
variety of different operating systems (Linux, BSD, NextStep, OS/2,
 Windows 95, ..).
 .
Besides being useful as an add-on library for all standard Java AWT
implementations, it can be used to build an own, stand-alone AWT that
requires just minimal native library support. This distribution comes
with a native layer for the kaffe-0.8.1 virtual machine.
 .
As a proof-of-concept, there are also some tools included which form a
Java specific IDE (integrated development environment, ClassBrowser
etc.). These tools already can be used to do serious Java programming
(BISS-AWT itself has been built with it). There even is a graphical
layout generator which considerably eases the effort required to
 design complex dialogs).
 .
The BISS-AWT comes with full sources (both Java and for the optional
native library) and is distributed under a GPL-like license (please
see file LICENSE.BISS_AWT for details). It is a vivid project which
will be constantly improved (with respect to both the GUI and the IDE
 components).

 * Supports ``\input'' command; both TeX and LaTeX version. Actually
includes the files. ``TEXINPUTS''-equivalent search path.
 * Intelligent warning/error handling. The user may promote/mute
warnings to suit his preferences. You may also mute warnings in
the header of a file; thus killing much unwanted garbage.
 * Scripts included for checking CWEB files written in LaTeX.
   (Requires perl v5).
 * Supports both LaTeX 2.09 and LaTeX2e.
 * Flexible output handling. Has some predefined formats and lets the
user specify his own format. Uses a ``printf()'' similar syntax.
``lacheck'' compatible mode included for interfacing with the
   AUC-TeX Emacs mode.
 * ARexx scripts for interfacing with ScMsg and VBrowse are included.
Special scripts included for CygnusED/GoldED, for binding to
   hotkey.
 * Amiga Workbench support. Parameters may be passed by
shift-clicking the LaTeX files and setting the remaining options
   in the tooltypes.
 * Wildcard matching (Amiga only). Matches file patterns internally,
thus saving a lot of work. This is, however, platform-specific
code -- on UNIX boxes this is done by the shell.
 * Written in ANSI C. ``configure'' script included for easy setup
   and installation on UNIX systems.

Size: 53220
MD5sum: eeaa68e7a7486de1738d3ba9539770cf
Description: aliases-style mail forwarding for qmail (source)
This is a source only package for building fastforward binary
package from source, because Dan Bernstein (fastforward's author)
only gives permission for fastforward to be distributed in source form.
 .
fastforward handles qmail forwarding according to a cdb database. It can
create forwarding databases from a sendmail-style /etc/aliases or from
 user-oriented virtual-domain tables.
 .
fastforward supports external mailing lists, stored in a binary format
for fast access. It has a tool to convert sendmail-style include files
 into binary lists.
 .
fastforward is more reliable than sendmail. sendmail can't deal with
 long aliases, or deeply nested aliases, or deeply nested include files;
fastforward has no limits other than memory. sendmail can produce
corrupted alias files if the system crashes; fastforward is crashproof.
 .
fastforward's database-building tools are much faster than sendmail's
newaliases. Even better, fastforward deliveries don't pause while the
 database is being rebuilt.
 .
fastforward does not support insecure sendmail-style program deliveries
from include files; you can use qmail's secure built-in mechanisms
instead. fastforward does support program deliveries from /etc/aliases.

 .
This is release 3.0 of the Gambit-C Scheme programming system.
Gambit-C includes a Scheme interpreter and a compiler which can be
used to build standalone executables. Because the compiler generates
portable C code, it is fairly easy to port to any machine with a
 decent C compiler.
 .
The Gambit-C system conforms to the R4RS and IEEE Scheme standards.
The full numeric tower is implemented, including: infinite precision
integers (bignums), rationals, inexact reals (floating point numbers),
and complex numbers. Gambit-C supports a number of extensions to the
 standards including:
 .
  - a debugger with a stack inspection facility (i.e. "backtrace")
  - a foreign function interface for C
  - a memory management system that grows and shrinks the heap based on
    the program's needs
  - a linker that builds standalone executables and shared libraries
  - dynamic loading of compiled modules and libraries (supported on many
platforms including Macintosh when CodeWarrior is installed)
  - Unicode support for characters, strings, I/O and source code
  - object finalization
  - pretty printing
  - string ports
  - bytevectors (uniform vectors of integers or floating point numbers)
  - record structures
  - keyword objects
  - optional and keyword parameters (with the syntax and semantics of DSSSL)
  - control over case sensitivity
  - write/read invariance of symbols, e.g. (string->symbol "B;123") => |B;123|
  - dynamic variables (i.e. variables with dynamic scope)
  - eval
  - Maclisp style macros

Ghostscript is used for postscript preview and printing. Usually as
a back-end to a program such as ghostview, it can display postscript
documents in an X11 environment. It can also use the Linux svga
library to display documents graphically on the Linux console.

Furthermore, it can render postscript files as graphics to be printed
on non-postscript printers. Supported printers include common
 dot-matrix, inkjet and laser models.

You have to install the gs-pdfencrypt package to be able to preview
encrypted pdf files. That package is in the nonus distribution due to
the stupid US regulations about exporting cryptographic software
(please look under ftp://nonus.debian.org/pub/debian-non-US to find it).

Description: Curses, An Interactive Diversion by Graham Nelson
As "Curses" opens, you're hunting about in the attic of your family home,
looking for a tatty old map of Paris (you're going on holiday tomorrow) and
generally trying to avoid all the packing. Aunt Jemima is potting daisies
and sulking; the attics are full of endless distractions and secrets; Greek
myths, horoscopes, sixth-century politics, a less than altogether helpful
demon, a mysterious bomb plot, photography, ritual, poetry and a dream or
two all get in your way; and somehow you keep being reminded of your family
through the ages, and all its Curses...
 .
-- could it be that even you are Cursed?
 .
 You'll need a Z-code (i.e. Infocom-format) game interpreter, such as
XZip or Frotz, to run this game.

Description: Jigsaw, An Interactive History by Graham Nelson
New Year's Eve, 1999, a quarter to midnight and where else to be but
Century Park! Fireworks cascade across the sky, your stomach rumbles
uneasily, music and lasers howl across the parkland... Not exactly your
ideal party (especially as that rather attractive stranger in black
has slipped back into the crowds) - but cheer up, you won't live to
 see the next.
 .
"Jigsaw" begins at the very end of the Twentieth Century, but the action
ranges over the past hundred years, covering the most critical historical
moments of the period: from assassinations to world war, from pop music
to the space race. But throughout it all, just WHO is Black?
 .
 You'll need a Z-code (i.e. Infocom-format) game interpreter, such as
XZip or Frotz, to run this game.

Description: calculates dimensions for microwave ham radio antennas
This is the HDL_ANT program by Paul Wade, N1BWT. It may be used freely
by licensed amateur radio operators, others must pay a fee to the ARRL
Foundation for use of the program.
 .
HDL_ANT does the calculations needed to successfully implement
several microwave antennas: horns, parabolic dishes, and
metal-plate lenses. It also does the calculations involved in
setting up an antenna range for antenna gain measurement. More
detailed explanations of the antennas and measurements may be
found in the series of QEX articles entitled 'Practical Microwave
Antennas,' in the September, October, and November 1994 issues.
 .
An additional article, 'More on Parabolic Dish Antennas,' in the
December 1995 issue of QEX, gave the descriptions for Offset
dishes, Penny feeds, and the use of sun noise to measure antenna
 performance and receiver noise figure.
 .
These articles are reprinted in the ARRL publication "UHF/Microwave
Projects Manual, Volume 2", ISBN 0-87259-631-1. Use of the program
 without the articles is problematic.
 .
All dimensions are in millimeters, since one mm. is about the
accuracy required for antennas to work well at 10 GHz. However,
there is an option for dimensions in inches, for the metric-impaired.

Description: IMG* Image Processing Toolset and C Library.
The ImgStar Image Processing Tools are intended as a complete
environment for image processing to compliment Jef Poskanzer's pbmplus
toolkit which mostly provides conversion between different standard
file formats. All 70 ImgStar tools use a similar UNIX command line
invocation style which includes a self documenting "-h" option. Images
are piped between operators, each of which provides some filtering
 transformation.
 .
 Tools are included that implement arithmetic and logical operations;
 magnify, crop and subsample; implement edge detection (e.g. Canny);
allow custom space-domain or frequency-domain convolution; include
 high-pass, low-pass, band-pass, rank-value, difference-of-Gaussians
and Gabor filtering; generate test images and implement differential
or vector operations e.g. gradient, derivatives, Laplacian. There are
also a variety of miscellaneous tools e.g. thresholding, zero-crossing
detection, and calculation of image statistics.

Description: A freely distributable parser for Infocom data files.
Now you can play all of the famous Infocom interactive-fiction adventure
games under Linux. All that is needed is the machine-independent
data file from the original package or multi-game sets like the "Lost
Treasures of Infocom" (I and II). Three of Infocom's sampler packages
 (sampler1_R55.z3, sampler2.z3, & minizork.z3) are available by anonymous
FTP from ftp.gmd.de under the /if-archive/infocom/demos directory.
There are also many downloadable games written independently of Infocom
in /if-archive/games/zcode on the same server. Put them in the local
 directory /usr/lib/games/infocom.
 .
Two executables are included in this package: one that runs under
standard termcap ("infocom") and one that uses ansi codes to do color
("infocoma"). Both will run on the Linux console.

Description: Convert JPEG compressed images to PostScript Level 2
jpeg2ps converts JPEG files to PostScript Level 2 or 3 EPS. In fact, jpeg2ps
is not really a converter but a "wrapper": it reads the image parameters
(width, height, number of color components) in a JPEG file, writes the
according EPS header and then copies the compressed JPEG data to the output
file. Decompression is done by the PostScript interpreter (only PostScript
Level 2 and 3 interpreters support JPEG compression and decompression).
If you have a slow communication channel and a fast printer, sending
compressed image data is a big win.

complicated, especially for beginners. Therefore, it is recommended
to use MusiXTeX with some pre-processors, such as ABC2MTeX, PMX, M-Tx and
GNU LilyPond, all available as Debian packages. Visit the GMD Music
Archive at http://www.gmd.de/Misc/Music/ for more information.

Description: An object request broker (ORB) implementation
omniorb is a freely available Common Object Request Broker
Architecture (CORBA) 2.3 compliant object request broker (ORB)
implementation. It is based on the IIOP communications
protocol and should be interoperable with any other
 CORBA 2.3 compliant ORB.
 .
This is a development package which contains an Interface
Definition Language (IDL) to C++ (pre)compiler as well as
the ORB library. This environment will allow you to develop
distributed objects which can communicate with other objects
without any regard to their location, platform, or language.
Therefore, it probably makes sense to also install a C++
development environment for this package to be useful.
 .
If none of the above terminology sounds familiar then you
most likely don't need this package.

Description: Typeset music scores with TeX
This is OpusTeX beta-test Version 0.84 (February 1998). This package
contains the OpusTeX macros, musixflex, OpusTeX User's Manual in LaTeX
source and DVI formats, and example source OpusTeX music score files.
 .
OpusTeX is a set of versatile and power TeX macros to typeset polyphonic,
orchestral or choral music. It allows very fine control and produces
 professional printed music scores.
 .
OpusTeX is still a beta-test Version and only dedicated for those, who
want to work with and--more important--to work on.
 .
Due to the important amount of information to be provided to the
typesetting process, coding OpusTeX might appear to be awfully
complicated, especially for beginners. Therefore, it is recommended
to use OpusTeX with some pre-processors such as ABC2MTeX.
Visit the GMD Music Archive at http://www.gmd.de/Misc/Music/ and check
the MuTeX Mailing List Archive for more information.

Size: 2429304
MD5sum: 516631e9bfaa201c5d23d7c9c086538e
Description: A `scheme' interpreter designed for writing system programs.
Scsh has a high-level process notation for doing shell-script like
tasks: running programs, establishing pipelines and I/O redirection.
Scsh embeds this process notation within a full Scheme
implementation. The process notation is realized as a set of macro
definitions, and is carefully designed to allow full integration with
standard Scheme code. Scsh isn't Scheme-like; it is Scheme.
 .
At the scripting level, scsh also has an Awk design, also implemented
as a macro that can be embedded inside general Scheme code.
 .
Scsh additionally provides the low-level access to the operating
system normally associated with C. The current release provides full
access to Posix, plus important non-Posix extensions, such as
complete sockets support. "Complete Posix" means: fork, exec & wait,
sockets, full read, write, open & close, seek & tell, complete
file-system access, including stat, chmod/chgrp/chown, symlink, FIFO
& directory access, tty & pty support, file locking, pipes, select,
 file-name pattern-matching, time & date, environment variables,
 signal handlers, and more.
 .
Please be aware that several of the other scheme implementations
being distributed as Debian GNU/Linux packages also provide much of
the similar system programming functionality. It is wisest to try
 them all and explore.

This is a source only package for building serialmail binary
package from source, because Dan Bernstein (serialmail's author)
only gives permission for qmail to be distributed in source form,

 .
Serialmail is for passing mail across serial links, like a modem
or a slow link: you use qmail to deliver messages to a maildir,
and then serialmail to deliver messages out of the maildir using
 SMTP or QMTP.
 .
Written by Dan J. Bernstein, serialmail uses ucspi-tcp/tcpclient
for networking, so it can be used with future UCSPI clients for
 transparent compression, IPv6, etc.

Description: Source only package for building ucspi-tcp binary package
Written by Dan J. Bernstein, tcpclient and tcpserver are
powerful easy-to-use command-line tools for building TCP
client-server applications. tcpserver provides TCP access control
features, similar to tcp-wrappers/tcpd's hosts.allow but much
faster; it can run high-availability services much better than
 inetd.
 .
Real-time Blocking List support is also included in tcpserver, so
you can run qmail-smtpd with it and avoid a lot of SPAM.
 .
tcpclient and tcpserver conform to UCSPI, the UNIX Client-Server
Program Interface, using the TCP protocol.
 .
Dan Bernstein (ucspi-tcp's author) only gives permission for his code
to be distributed in source form, or binary by approval. This package
has been put together to allow people to easily build a binary
 package for themselves, from source.
 .
If there is a package called ucspi-tcp available, then Dan has approved the
binary version of the package for distribution, so you might as well install
that and save yourself some effort.

Andrew Plotkin, the author of A Change in the Weather, writes:

"A CHANGE IN THE WEATHER is a cruel game, by the Zarfian Interactive
Fiction Rating System. Any choice you make may be a wrong choice,
and you may not discover it was wrong until later; and not choosing is
always a choice. Timing may be critical. Save often and keep your old
